The article is devoted to the role of Buddhism in the formation of the political system of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386‒534). The main factor in its development was the attitude of the emperors to Buddhism. The founder of the Northern Wei Dynasty, Tuoba Gui (Dao Wu-di, 386-409), paid special attention to Buddhism, seeing it as an ideological means for consolidating the multi-ethnic population, which met his political interests and contributed to the centralization of power.
