In the article, the authors, based on the fact of the wide popularity of the Geser epic and the Buddhist cult of Geser in Inner Asia, formulate the question of the origins of the opposition between Geser and Dharmapala Zhamsaran among the Buryat lamas. And as a result of the analysis of theogonic versions of the origin of the Buddhist cults of Geser and Zhamsaran (Begtse) they come to the conclusion that the search for the reasons for their opposition leads beyond the comparative theogonic analysis into the area of religious-political relations in the history of Inner Asia.
