The article is devoted to the analysis of interaction between Taoism and Buddhism in their historical development from the moment of Buddhism’s entry into China to the formation of syncretism of three teachings, known in China as the unity of three teachings (san jiao, 三教). The article examines the conventional stages of interaction between Buddhism and Taoism, their relationship to each other, mutual influence and mutual borrowing. It shows the interaction of Buddhism and Taoism in the framework of their syncretism, including Confucianism, as well as the demand for such syncretism in the modern conditions of China.
