In the Sūtra on the Threefold Training (Sanskrit Śikṣātrayasūtra, Tib. bslab pa gsum gyi mdo), Buddha Śākyamuni instructs on the need for sequential study of three trainings: discipline, meditative concentration, and wisdom. Their interconnected nature is emphasized: what was previously mastered is the foundation for learning what follows. These trainings constitute a gradual path to awakening.
