The work contains an analysis of the reasons for the problematic use of Western philosophical terminology and categories for the translation and interpretation of Buddhist philosophy: linguistic relativity, the influence of the Indo-European language model of the world on Indo-European ontology, the Western understanding of philosophy, its subject and purpose, Eurocentric stereotypes, radical ontological specificity of Buddhist philosophy. The author of the paper proposes to make hermeneutical adjustments to European (Russian) translations and interpretations of Tibetan Buddhist terminology that expresses the basic philosophical doctrines of Buddhism, for example, the doctrine of the «Four Truths of the Āryas», and gives an analysis of the philosophical distortion that is introduced into the understanding of this doctrine through a non-reflexive translation and the interpretation of the Tibetan concept «‘phags-pa’i-bden-pa-bzhi» as «the four noble truths».
